I've been looking at recent conference programs in my field (sociology) to get ideas for dissertation topics. Sharing what I found in case it helps others:

ASA Annual Meeting 2025 themes:
  • Digital Inequalities in Post-Pandemic Society
  • Climate Justice and Social Movements
  • Race, Space, and Policing
  • Aging and Technology
  • Work and Labor in the Gig Economy
European Sociological Association 2024:
  • Crises and Social Change
  • Migration and Belonging
  • Inequalities in Education
  • Health and Healthcare Access
The University of Zurich has a list of dissertation topics in political science including:
  • Ideological Bias in Large Language Models
  • AI Systems in Political Practice
  • Democratic Accountability in Algorithmic Governance
A Norwegian university guide suggests looking at:
  • Unresolved debates in your field — what are scholars arguing about?
  • Gaps in the literature — what hasn't been studied?
  • Methodological innovations — can you apply a new method to an old question?
  • Interdisciplinary connections — can you combine insights from different fields?
The key is to find something that's:
  • Interesting enough to sustain years of work
  • Feasible with available data and resources
  • Original enough to contribute something new
  • Relevant to the field
A professor told me: "Your dissertation doesn't have to change the world. It just has to be a solid contribution that you can finish" .

For other grad students: how did you land on your topic? Any tips for narrowing down options? I have too many interests and not enough focus. 😵‍💫
