I got caught using an ai homework helper and now I'm terrified

I need advice. I used an AI homework helper to write a discussion post for my online class. It was just a short response, nothing major. I thought I was being subtle—I rewrote some sentences, added my own examples. But my professor emailed me saying my post was flagged by their AI detection software and asking me to meet with her. I'm terrified. I don't know what to say. Should I lie and deny it? Should I confess and beg for mercy? Has anyone been through this? What happened? I can't afford to fail this class, and I definitely can't afford an academic integrity violation on my record. I know I messed up, but I'm panicking and I don't know how to handle this. Please, any advice would help.

Martin, I've been through this (different situation but similar). Here's what I learned:

Do NOT lie. If they have a flag from detection software, they already suspect something. Lying makes it an integrity issue plus a honesty issue.

Do go in humble. Start with: "I made a mistake and I'm really sorry. I was overwhelmed and took a shortcut I shouldn't have." Explain the circumstances but don't make excuses.

Do ask what you can do to fix it. Some professors will let you rewrite the assignment for partial credit. Some will give a zero but not escalate. Some have to report it regardless. But your attitude matters enormously.

Do learn from it. This is a wake-up call. Use it to change how you handle stress.

You're not a bad person. You made a bad choice. Own it, learn, move forward.
