How do you actually START writing a dissertation?

I have all my research. All my data. Everything is ready. And I've been "getting ready to write" for six months. Six months.

An article from the American Historical Association suggests setting up a "writing schedule" and treating each timeslot as an "appointment with yourself" . They also say to use a timer and break your time into "short intense bursts of writing" .

That sounds great in theory. In practice, I open my document, stare at it, and suddenly it's three hours later and I've accomplished nothing.

Has anyone actually made this schedule thing work? How do you FORCE yourself to write? 🫠
