How do you choose a dissertation topic that won't make you miserable? 😵‍💫

Third year of my PhD and I still haven't settled on a topic. I keep going back and forth — this seems interesting, no that seems interesting. My advisor says "just pick something" but it's not that simple. I'll be working on this for YEARS.

A guide from a Norwegian university says to start with what genuinely puzzles you . What questions from your field keep you up at night? What contradictions have you noticed?

Another tip: look at recent conferences in your field. What are people presenting on? What's trending? Those could be fruitful areas .

For other PhD students: how did you finally choose? What made you commit? 🎯

The Norwegian guide is onto something but also... be careful with "what keeps you up at night." I chose my topic because I was obsessed with this niche question. Now I'm three years in and honestly? I'm a little sick of it. The passion faded around year two. What keeps me going now is momentum and the fear of not finishing. So maybe pick something you find interesting enough but not something that feels like your entire identity.
