How to write a thesis in one semester: is it possible?

I'm a history major, and I really, really want to graduate with honors. To do that, I need to write a thesis. The problem? I switched majors late, so I don't have the full year that most people take. I have one semester. Four months. January to April.

My advisor said it's "ambitious" which I'm pretty sure is professor-speak for "this is a terrible idea but I can't stop you." I've already picked a topic (something specific about local political movements in the 80s) and I have access to archives. But I'm terrified.

Has anyone actually done this? Is it possible to go from "idea" to "finished, defended thesis" in 15 weeks without completely losing your mind? I need a realistic timeline. Here's what I'm thinking:
  • Weeks 1-3: Research Blitz. Read everything, take insane notes, visit archives. No writing, just absorbing.
  • Weeks 4-5: Outline from Hell. Not just bullet points, but a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline with the main argument for each.
  • Weeks 6-11: Drafting Sprint. Write a chapter a week. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to exist. Pomodoro method, no distractions, caffeine IV drip.
  • Week 12-13: Revision. Actually turn the garbage draft into something coherent.
  • Week 14: Polish. Citations, formatting, reading it out loud.
  • Week 15: Defend and Cry.
Is this insane? Where am I going to fail? I'm most worried about the research phase—what if I can't find enough sources? What if my argument changes halfway through and I have to go back to the archives?

For those who've done a thesis (even in a year), what's the one thing you wish you'd known at the beginning? I need all the tips, tricks, and reality checks you've got. Also, how do you eat and sleep during this? 😩

The "outline from hell" idea is actually brilliant and I wish I'd done that.

Here's my horror story: I skipped the detailed outline and just started writing. Got to chapter 3 and realized my entire argument was wrong because I hadn't thought it through properly. Had to go back to research. Lost THREE WEEKS. Almost didn't graduate. 😭

Learn from my pain: argue with yourself on paper BEFORE you write. Write the outline like it's going to be graded. Every chapter's main claim. Every piece of evidence you'll use. Every counterargument you'll address. If you can't explain it in outline form, you can't explain it in 20 pages.

Also, schedule your crying. I'm serious. I had "Thursday 3pm: cry in the library bathroom" on my calendar. Sounds ridiculous but acknowledging the stress helped.

You can do this. Just be smarter than I was.
